The "V" in WVFAS stands for Volunteer! When you dial 9-1-1 at 3:00 AM, the people who respond are your neighbors. They took the time to become EMTs, to keep their skills sharp and to be on duty at WVFAS HQ, ready to respond.

We need your help - running an ambulance service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week requires a lot of people. Joining the Squad is a great way to help your neighbors and community - there is nothing like the feeling you get when you help someone who is sick or injured.

Here's how it works:

  1. Contact Tom Cheplic, VP of the Squad and new member coordinator to set up an initial interview and obtain a membership application. You can email Tom, or phone him at the Squad at 201-863-6611.

  2. We'll run a background check to make sure your past doesn't include anything that would prevent you from being a member.

  3. If all goes well, we'll get you registered for an EMT-B training class. The classes meet two evenings a week and some Saturdays for about three months. In all, you'll get about 130 hours of classroom and hands on training. The training and books are provided free of charge.

  4. Once you are an EMT, we'll get you riding on a WVFAS ambulance as a probationary member for 6 months or so - you'll put your classroom learning to work with experienced EMTs before you ride as a full crew member.

Members of the WVFAS are asked to sign up for one regular shift per week. Shifts are available during the day, evening or overnight hours. Every month, each member is also responsible for a Sunday shift as well.

If you have questions, call us at 201.863.6611 or drop us an email at info@wvfas.org - we'll get you the answers you need.
